Traits and generation
The five trait categories, how a trait set is generated at hatch, and how many permutations exist.
Every Pal is described entirely by its traits. This page is the specification for how they are structured and how they are chosen.
Categories
There are five categories. A Pal holds exactly one selection from each, though two of them accept an empty selection.
| Category | Options | Empty allowed | Gated by tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coat | 24 | No | No |
| Garment | 18 | No | Partially |
| Headwear | 12 | Yes | Yes |
| Accessory | 9 | Yes | Yes |
| Expression | 6 | No | No |
Coat determines the base fur pattern and colour. Garment covers the body. Headwear sits above the ears. Accessory occupies the space in front of the body. Expression sets the face.
How a trait set is generated
At hatch, the programme derives a seed from the referral identifier and the holder's account. The seed is then used to draw one option per category, in the order the categories are listed above.
Draws are uniform within whatever options the Pal's tier makes available. There is no weighting inside a tier, and no draw depends on the result of another.
Because the seed is derived rather than stored, the same referral always produces the same Pal. Re-running generation on an existing referral returns the trait set that Pal already has.
Gating
Tier does not add categories. It changes which options within a category can be drawn.
Headwear is empty below the Legendary tier except during drop windows. Accessory is empty below the Epic tier. Four garment colours are reserved for the Rare tier and above.
The full mapping is on Rarity tiers.
Permutations
Outside drop windows, the count is the product of the available options, treating the empty selection as one option in each category that allows it.
24 coats times 18 garments times 13 headwear states times 10 accessory states times 6 expressions gives 336,960 permutations.
Drop windows add options rather than replacing them, so the figure rises for the duration of a drop and returns afterwards. The count of permutations reachable at a given tier is always lower than the total, because gating removes options.
What traits do not do
Traits carry no effect. They do not alter what a Pal can be used for, what it costs to list, whether it can take part in a playdate, or how it is ranked anywhere in the programme.
A Pal with a full trait set and a Pal with two empty categories are the same kind of object and are treated identically everywhere except in how they are drawn.
